Nature Education

Designed for Homeschool Students

Located at Briar Bush’s 12-acre nature center, students are provided with exceptional opportunities to explore and learn about a variety of environmental topics through hands-on lessons and activities.  A love of nature, learning, and the outdoors provides the focus for this unique educational experience.

  • A good portion of most classes are held outdoors (in most cases rain or shine), so students are asked to please come dressed appropriately.
  • Lesson handouts will be available for students and parents.
  • Non-participants are welcome to stay in the Briar Bush Museum during class, but are asked to remain separate from the class to eliminate distractions.

Beginning this upcoming year, lessons will take a more adventurous approach!  Students will learn about science concepts through experience, in the form of field studies.  The curriculum builds over a three-year rotation.  The idea is that each student will be in a particular age bracket for three years.  Each year students will explore a new theme, which will encompass a wide variety of topics all pertaining to the overarching theme.  Once a child moves on to an older age bracket, they will return to a theme they saw three years earlier, but explore each theme on a more advanced level (as shown below).

The age brackets are strong suggestions, however, if you believe a bracket is too basic or advanced for your child, you may chose to place them in a bracket that better suits their needs.

Curricula is based off of the Pennsylvania State Standards and written by a certified educator.  Dates and more detailed descriptions of the 2008-2009 lessons are available by clicking on the above link* for the age bracket that pertains to your child.  Register your child for all sessions or choose your favorite subjects. Register by giving us a call at        (215) 887-6603. For questions, please call or email ssadlon@briarbush.org.
